The Basque fleet has ended the anchovy fishery to move on to catching bonito del norte (Cantábrico white tuna). They use the smallest anchovy as bait to catch the bonito del norte, and these days they are sailing northwest in search of the shoals that come in from the Atlantic to feed.
We are ready to prepare our artisanal preserves Family Tradition in a sustainable way, scrupulously respecting the established fishing quotas that keep the sea alive with its species thanks to controlled fishing.

The bonito del norte quota for the inshore fleet in the Bay of Biscay amounts to around 18,000 tonnes by 2023. The campaigns of recent years have yielded positive results. Last year, Basque ports recorded the entry of 7,802 tonnes of white tuna with an average price of 4.18 euros, with the majority of entries occurring in Getaria and Hondsrribia, mainly, followed by Bermeo, Ondarroa and Pasaia. (Basque Country harbours-North of Spain).
2023 Bonito del norte fishery.
This year’s campaign has begun in a satisfactory manner for the Basque Arrantzales (fishermen). A month after the start of the fishery, catches are good and the outlook for the future is favourable.
However, the water temperature is causing a lot of concern: this year the water is warmer than other years at this time of year and it is not yet known how this will affect the bonito del norte.
Thus, uncertainty -for one reason or another- always plays a leading role in our fishing campaigns (dates and places of fishing, limited number of pieces, very variable price per kilo, always rising cost of ingredients…).
Anyway, we are ready to prepare our artisanal preserves Family Tradition in a sustainable way, scrupulously respecting the established fishing quotas that keep the sea alive with its species thanks to controlled fishing. We love the CANTÁBRICO.
